A man with full head protection helmet

Choosing the right bike helmet is an important part of  keeping  you safe on the road. Basically, all helmets on the market place are made with certain safety standards for riders. It is not a question which one is better than the others.

In this article, what we will pay attention to is how to help you to choose a bike helmet that fits with your head and your riding style. Because it will protect and make you comfortable.

Choosing a bike helmet based on your riding styles

Similarly to the bikes, bike helmets have different styles for different purposes of use.

Helmets used for recreational purposes are  much different compared with one for racing purpose. For example, a mountain bike helmet for trail is quite lighter and simpler than a heavy, full jaw- protection helmet for Enduro and downhill  mountain sports.

So we can divide it in 2 types

  • Recreational purpose
  • Racing purposes

For recreational purposes like trail, cross- country, commute, cruising ..a daily casual bike helmet is safe enough for you.

For racing purposes like downhill mountain sport or professional road racing. You will need helmets specialised made for stronger protection purposes.

Helmets for downhill mountain sport are full head protection with heavy durable plastic material which can withstand the strong hits.

Helmets for professional road racing are normally extreme light with more air ventilation system to help your head cool down quickly.

Choosing a bike helmet that fit with your head ‘size

It is the most important thing to care about when it comes to choosing points. Because how a helmet can protect you if it is too loose .And tent to go backward when you are riding against the wind .Or you feel your head squeezed inside because it is too tight.

You can avoid all of this by making a head size measurement  before making a buying decision.

HOW TO MEASURE A PROPER HELMET? – To find the right size bike helmet, start by measuring your head circumference, wrap a flexible tape measure around the largest portion of your head—about one inch above your eyebrows. Or, wrap a string around your head, then measure the length of the string with a yardstick. Size Large is recommended if your size is between 21.3-22.8inch (54cm-58cm).

After making a measurement, be sure to check again the size instruction from the manufacturers.

Other factors

Helmets are various in different design, colours. You can choose one with or without sun protection caps. And different colours as you like.

You need to learn how to adjust the lace, tight it fits with your jaw. This will help the helmet stay firmly on your head without moving when you ride opposite the wind. And help protect your skull to maximum if you accidentally fall down from your bike.

Be sure to keep your helmets always in a dry place to avoid the foam inside the helmet don’t get some kind of mold, bacteria . You may consider washing your helmet with light soap and drying it after that.

You may consider buying a new one if you see some small cracks on the surface of your helmet.

Conclusion

As same as riding shoes , helmets are must condition for a cyclists when they want to taking part in this sport.

Buying a helmet that fits with your head and your riding style is not a fancy job. Only be sure you pay attention to some above factors to choose the right one for you.
