Why Pneumatic Tires are used for Electric Scooters is a topic we will talk about in this article.
Pneumatic tires are tires specially made for heavy- duty purposes. They are often used to make aero plane tires, car tires, forklift tires, motorcycle tires, industrial machines, agricultural machines… In the field of outdoor recreational sports. Pneumatic tires are the main component of motorcycle tires. And most recently, they are the key factors for electric scooter wheels
Why pneumatic tires are used to make wheels for Electric scooters? Why not other types of tires.
We all know that electric scooters are made in a compact design. All components that make an electric scooter are streamline, mini sizes . However, they are built to withstand heavy loads and are capable of moving at high speed. Because of this, pneumatic tires are an absolute choice for electric scooters. With a small size around 10 inch and compression tires . Some electric scooters can carry one person weighing 330lbs /150kg and reach up to 70MPH -112km/h.
What makes scooter tires so special?
Pneumatic tires of scooters are made from special synthetic rubber with thickness and high- elasticity. Together with the tread on their surface. They allows scooters the ability to carry a high load and travel smoothly and stably on paved roads.
How many types?
Pneumatic tires of scooters are divided into 2 types : air- filled tires and airless tires.
Air-filled tires
Air-filled tires are pneumatic tires with air-filled tubes inside. This design allows riders the flexibility in changing pressures on tires or in short is PSI ( pounds per square inch). Setting the correct psi will help your scooter work more efficiently and smoothly.
You may refer the chart behind to know about the basic standard of PSI. It should be adjusted for each different weight of riders.-
- Rider ‘weight 110-155 lbs (or 50-70 kg): the pressure on the front wheel should be 35-40psi,and the rear wheel should be 40-50psi.
- Rider’ weight 155-198 lbs (or 70-90 kg): the pressure on the front wheel should be 40-45psi, and on the rear wheel should be 45-55psi.
- Rider Weight 198-220 lbs (or 90-100 kg): the pressure on the front wheel should be 45-50psi, and on the rear wheel should be 50-60psi.
- Rider’ weight 220+ lbs (or 100 kg+): the pressure on the front wheel should be 50-55psi,and on the rear wheel should be 60-65psi
These tires provide good shock absorption. Although made from thick rubber, they still may get punctured if your electric scooter hits a nail or sharp obstacles.
Airless Pneumatic tires/ Solid Pneumatic tires
These types of pneumatic tires are solid. They are made from the whole elastic high quality synthetic rubber. There are no tubes inside, no need to change psi. Manufacturers have counted exactly the max pressure that tires can carry the weight of riders.
Currently, on the market. There are scooters with both front and rear tires that are made from air- filled or airless. Or they use the combination of both types with the front wheel is air- filled, the back wheel is airless or vice versa.
Summary
So choosing air- filled pneumatic tires or airless pneumatic tires will totally depend on how you like. Theory, air- filled pneumatic tires will provide more comfort and airless pneumatic tire will provide more durability. However, there is a truth ,manufacturers before launching their products to the market. They already did so many tests. So you should not worry much about the quality of each types.
The overall value of an electric scooter lies in many other factors. As you know, they include motor, battery, brake system, frame material, light signal…
