In this article, we will share with you knowledge about IP codes on high-tech products. What does an IP code mean?
Nowadays, high-tech products are available in every sector of our life. They can be small handy devices like smartphones, laptops, Tv or big ones such as autos, electric scooters, electric bikes…
High-tech products, besides the convenience and efficiency they provide . Safety for users is a must-be condition which manufacturers should recommend from the very beginning .
A product like electronic bike or electric scooter, waterproof or non water proof is very important. Because it relates to electronic and electrical elements and rider’s safety.
What are IP codes?
IP codes are a global standard measurement which is created by the international electrotechnical commission (The IEC)
An IP code or an Ingress Protection code is determined as the concretization level of protection for one physical product from external influences such as dust, intrusion, abrasives and water. For example, if one product has IP54. It will be described as high dustproof, waterproof from any angle but not built to be submerged in the water.
More specifically, one IP has 2 digits. Sometimes it comes with a letter at the end to clear about state of resistance such as oil or wire….
The first digit shows the level of protection from solid objects. It ranges from 0-6 or X Letter ( X letter means product has not been tested in that category)
The second digit shows the level of protection from liquids. It ranges from :0-8 or X letter ( X letter means product has not been tested in that category)
So when you look at the IP of one product you can easily know about the it’ ability of water resistant and dust resistant
IP: 00
The first digit will show the level of protection from solid | The second digit will show the level of protection from liquids
0 | No protection | 0 | No protection |
1 | Protected from solid objects bigger than 50mm diameter | 1 | Protected from vertically falling water drops |
2 | Protected from solid objects with diameter under 12.5mm | 2 | Protected from vertically falling water drops at a 15 degree angle |
3 | Protected from solid objects bigger than 2.5mm diameter | 3 | Protected from water spraying up to 60 degree on either side |
4 | Protected from solid objects bigger than 1.0mm diameter | 4 | Protected from water spraying at any angle |
5 | Protected from any dust that may interfere with equipment | 5 | Protected from water jets from any direction |
6 | Completely protected from any dust 100% | 6 | Protected from powerful water jets |
7 | Protected when being submerged in water and water pressure
8 | Protected when being continuously submerged in water and water pressure |
So if you look at to buy a smart phone for example if it has IP 68. It means that this product is high quality and enclosed one with maximum dustproof and waterproof. There is no problem if this phone accidentally fall in to water.
And besides IP 00 ratings, sometimes we can see a letter after IP 00 if it end with
- D means that wire
- F means oil
- H means high voltage device
- M means device moving during water test
- S means device standing during test
- W means weather conditions
