Thanks to its light weight structure, durability, and long capacity. In recent years, Lithium -ion batteries have contributed to the outstanding development of the electricity and electronics industry. This advanced technology has turned the dream of electric cars or electric bikes becomes a real. In addition, not to mention to a various products get benefits from applying this useful energy like laptops, cell phones….And with rechargeable ability, Lithium-ion battery is a right choice of many users for long-term purposes.
The structure of Lithium-ion battery
Lithium-ion batteries are created by 4 main elements : anode, cathode, separator electrolyte and two current collectors( they are positive and negative). Lithium- ion is the main component of the battery which is stored in anode and cathode. The electrolyte acts as a mediator which carries positively charged lithium-ions from the anode to the cathode and vice versa through the separator. Inside the battery Lithium-ions move freely. Creating free electrons in the anode and a charge at the positive current collector. This electrical current will move from the current collector and provide power for electric devices like computer, smart phones…
Operating principle
Technically, when the battery is in use. The anode releases lithium-ions to the cathode and creates a flow of electrons. And when the battery is in charge. Lithium-ions are released by the cathode and the anode will receive them.
Lithium-ion batteries come in four shapes : small cylinder, large cylinder, flat and prismatic. They include
– Lithium-Cobalt Oxide
– Lithium-titanite: This is mainly used for electric cars, bicycles, scooters, motorcycles
– Lithium-Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide
– Lithium-Manganese Oxide
– Lithium-Iron Phosphate
What is energy density and power density?
To determine the value of a battery, people look at 2 factors
- Energy density (Wh/kg) people measures in watt-hours per kilogram. This is the whole amount of energy the battery can store on the whole mass
- Power density (W/kg) people measures in watts per kilogram. This is the energy which a battery can power for devices on the whole mass
In the electric bike industry, batteries have different Voltage and capacity. Voltages include 36V, 48V, 52V and capacity has variety from 250W to 1500W or more
At this moment a battery with 52V and 1500W is the highest Voltage and longest range capacity battery.
How to take care for battery
Taking care lithium-ion batteries in correct way will increase the their’ capacity and longer time of using. Be sure you should not put batteries under the sun because this can make them become over heating and can lead to explode.
Keeping them in too cold weather is also not good decision, batteries will lost power themselves. Room temperature is the ideal for the longevity of battery. The best is around 18- 25 degrees.
When you don’t use your electric bike in a few days, remove battery and keep them in dry place is the correct way to hold them
And please don’t over charge them or waiting till batteries are totally empty. Using correct charger from the original manufacturers will last the life of batteries longer.
Lithium -ion batteries are rechargeable and manufacturers can recycle them. Using in correct way they will provide a huge benefit in energy and contribute to environmental protection.
Summary:
You are looking to buy an electric bike? when you understand the structure of lithium-ion battery and know how it work. This will be help you to be more confident in choosing a correct electric bike for you. You will know how to get along with your electric bike in a better way. You will know exactly how far an electric bike can support you, how to care for batteries to keep them in good working condition and more durable.
