How do electric bike motors work, brush or brushless? probably is an interesting question many people ask themselves when they see on the street a running e-bike. Or when they are looking to buy an e -bike. But they want to get more information before making a buying decision.
To help you find out the answer, we will cover this question in the following section
Motors
Unlike scooters or mopeds which totally depend on movement of motors. Electric bikes work a little bit differently because manufacturers still maintain the original purpose of bikes is for fitness, making people sweat and keeping them healthy.
One electric bike can be functioned in 3 modes
- Human mode: No power support, riders use their force to ride a bike
- Assist sensor pedal : The amount of energy from battery will support riders through sensor pedal
- Pure bike energy: Bike will support 100% energy
So compared with a scooter, an e-bike has more flexibility in the way it uses energy to make the bike run.
Only when riders set the mode of function like assist sensor pedal or pure bike energy, an e-bike has full meaning as a bike equipped with a motor . If not, it is a regular bike.
Motor of an e- bike can be mounted on the front wheel, on the center of the bike or on rear wheel. It depends on how the purpose of use of this e- bike.
How do motors work?
On human mode
There is no work of motor, you pedal and use your energy to move your bike.
On assist sensor pedal
Motor will receive the amount of energy from the battery through a controller which works cooperatively with the sensor of the pedal. Sensor of the pedal will intelligently measure the energy which riders need to be supported in different riding situations. It can be uphill, downhill or on the flat road.
You and your bike will work together to spin your bike’s back wheel to push it ahead.
On Pure bike energy
When you turn this mode, the bike will support 100% energy .It work as a scooter or a moped. You don’t need to pedal. You will receive useful support when you are in need and your leg gets tired.
Often, all modern e-bikes are equipped with an LCD, mounted on the handlebars. It will let you choose which mode you want to ride, as well as provide all helpful information about your trip: mileage, battery level , calories burnt and more
Brush or brushless?
Unlike the old-school e- bikes which use brush motors to spin the bike. With this design, motors are less durable because the brush can be worn out after long use. And they can get jammed up and break down. They work noisy and sometimes are prone to sparking.
Most of Electric bike motors on the market now are brushless.
Brushless motors are out of these problems. They work smoothly with a totally closed structure. They are waterproof, anti-rust and much more durable.
Battery
Motor of each e-bike is designed to be compatible with the battery to receive a suitable source of energy, which the manufacturer intends to make for an E-bike. This means that when your bike’s battery gets old and you need to buy a new one. Be sure you buy a battery with the same power and capacity to fit with the bike’ motor.
After all, I hope these above information can help you to understand How do electric bike motors work? So you have a better vision in details for each buy.
